Short answer: no, not by itself. What kills water resistance is reassembling a watch without checking the three parts that actually do the sealing: the crystal gasket, the crown, and the case back. Where water actually gets in
Every watch has exactly three points where water can sneak past the case, and they're the same three points every time.
The crystal gasket. This is the ring sitting between your crystal and the case wall. It's what most people forget about because it's small, cheap, and easy to reuse without thinking. Don't reuse it. A gasket that's been compressed once, popped out, and pushed back in has already lost some of its seal. Seiko mod suppliers sell replacement crystal gaskets for a couple dollars. Buy a fresh one every time you swap a crystal, no exceptions.
The crown. If your Seiko has a screw-down crown, water resistance depends on that crown threading all the way down and staying there. Screw it in after reassembly and check that it sits tight against the case with no gap. If the crown gasket inside looks worn, flattened, or cracked, replace it. The case back. This is where the "tighter is better" instinct backfires. The case back gasket does the sealing, not the torque on the case back itself. Cranking it down harder doesn't create a better seal, it just risks stripping threads or warping the gasket. Snug and even beats gorilla-tight. If you're swapping cases entirely, inspect the new case's gasket before you close it up. A gasket that looks dry, cracked, or flattened on one side needs to go.
What "doing it right" actually looks like
None of this requires special tools or a watchmaking certification. It requires slowing down at three specific steps.
Replace gaskets, don't reuse them. Every time a crystal, crown, or case back comes off, treat the gasket as consumable. It's the cheapest part in the build and the one most likely to fail if you skip it.
Check alignment before you seal anything. A crown that's threaded in crooked or a case back that's sitting on the gasket at an angle will leak even if the parts themselves are fine. Look at it straight on before you call it done.
Snug, not savage. Case backs and screw-down crowns need to seat firmly, not be cranked with everything you've got. If something needs excessive force to close, stop and check why, don't just push harder.
When to get it pressure tested
If you're building something you actually plan to swim, dive, or shower with regularly, a pressure test is worth the money. Most local watch and jewelry shops that service watches can dry-test a case for water resistance for a modest fee, and it tells you definitively whether your seal is good instead of just hoping. This matters more the deeper the rating you're relying on. A 100m-rated build you're wearing to wash dishes has a lot of margin for error. A 200m dive-rated build you're actually planning to dive with does not.
If you're not planning to pressure test, the safest habit is to treat any watch you've opened up as "shower and rain safe" until proven otherwise, rather than assuming full factory-spec water resistance carries over automatically.
